Posters off the Wall (Peg)
(see Steely Dan, ‘Peg’)
He called me Peg, like a pirate’s leg
I said, ‘I don’t like it’ – he frowned, and said,
‘Watch yourself, someone will take you away’
And I said, ‘As if I’d let them’
‘Oh honey,’ he told me, ‘you wouldn’t have a say’
His jealousy was a thing alive and wriggling
‘Stop smiling,’ he would say, ‘it gets to niggling’
The studios were seedy, but I really didn’t care
I was born with nothing, I had nothing to compare
I would have loved him if he’d let me have ambition
If he’d not seen everyone as competition
Would have loved him, but I left him,
Before he could tear me down
Like he tore the others down
Like posters off the wall
And I would not fall
‘Oh honey,’ he said, ‘you don’t know what you’re doing
‘These movie men just want you for pursuing’
But I clawed through endless rooms of straying hands and whiskey breath
And I built a life, and I won’t let him smother me to death
I would have loved him if he’d let me have ambition
If he’d not mistaken love for demolition
Would have loved him, but I left him
Before he could tear me down
Like he tore the others down
Like posters off the wall
And I would not fall
I would not fall
Oh, you should see my pictures now
See the smile I wear since he stopped coming round
I would have loved him if he’d let me have ambition
If he’d not seen everyone as competition
Would have loved him but I left him,
Before he could tear me down
Like a poster off the wall
Like I was nothing at all
And I would not fall
I would not fall
